Bandō Mitsugorō VII (1882-1961) was a kabuki actor reputedly of small stature and high voice. However he was so revered for his extraordinary dance performances, he became known as a "god of dance" in kabuki and was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government. Upon his death, his name passed to his adopted son, Mitsugorō VIII, who would equal if not surpass his father's legacy as one of the most superb kabuki actors of his generation.
