Bio

A native of Fukushima prefecture, Saitō began his artistic career designing shop signs. During his mid 20s, he moved to Tokyo and studied Western-style oil painting. He experimented with woodblock printing, carving and printing his designs from one block. Printmaking became his sole focus, and in 1938 he finished a series called Winter in Aizu that illustrated the rural environs of his childhood home. After World War II, he began participating in exhibitions with Hiratsuka Un'ichi and other Creative Print artists. In the 1950s, Saitō won acclaim for his work at various international venues; his print of Prime Minister Satō Eisaku was used for a Time magazine cover in 1967.
