Bio

Jacob Kainen is represented in the Portland Art Museum collection both as an artist and as a donor. Kainen served as Curator of Graphic Arts at the Smithsonian Museum of History and Technology (not the Smithsonian American History Museum), and then as Curator of prints at the National Collection of Fine Art (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum). He and his wife Ruth became close friends with Gordon Gilkey, the printmaker who taught at Oregon State University before joining the staff of the Portland Art Museum as its first Curator of Graphic Arts. Jacob Kainen owned one print by Gilkey that he later donated to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Our thanks to print dealer Coinrad Graeber for providing the background information on the relationship between the Kainens and Gordon Gilkey. -- email to M. Graybill, 5/7/2015. M. Graybill
