Description

Hiroshige’s imagination soars above the marshy edges of the city in this dramatic design of a hawk eyeing a flock of waterfowl in Edo Bay. Human figures are absent in this frigid snowscape, but the presence of people is felt in the clustered roofs of distant houses and the discarded wooden bucket floating in the bay. Whether on the rural fringes of the city or at Edo’s crowded center, the human and natural world are never far from one another in Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views.
