In Banquet, two factory workers eat lunch side by side. The scene, presumably from the viewpoint of another customer at the lunch counter, suggests progress in the workplace resulting from President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Executive Order 8802, declaring, "There shall be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries and in Government, because of race, creed, color, or national origin." Roosevelt issued the order in 1941, four years before Hirsch made this print, in response to African Americans being overlooked for better paying jobs and discouraged from joining the military.
