Many of Albert Besnard's finest prints feature the private lives of women, including this arresting portrait of two morphine addicts. Morphine, a powerful opiate, was both legal and widespread at this time. Although used by all classes of society, it was widely seen as the refuge of women, such as these subversive beauties who confront the viewer with their glassy eyes and languorous poses.
