Description

Charles Heaney moved to Portland in 1913 with his sister and their widowed mother. Heaney promptly apprenticed himself to a jeweler, learned the art of engraving, and continued to support himself as an engraver until his retirement at age 65. Heaney discovered his love of art making in 1917 when he began attending Harry Wentz's night classes, focusing on printmaking long before he took up painting. Heaney was also strongly influenced by his friendship with C.S. Price, whom he met shortly after Price moved to Portland in 1929. Mountains, an unusually large painting for Heaney, shows his skill with color and his interest in the geologic structures of the Pacific Northwest.
