Motion-picture technique using single-frame exposures to give the illusion of movement to inanimate articulated figures or to animated sequences or to give the illusion of sudden appearance or disappearance of objects or performers from a scene. It is an essential technique in model animation, cutout animation, pixillation, and special effects.
