- Details
Since 2009, in response to a call from photographers Stu Levy and Christopher Rauschenberg, as well as art historian Prudence Roberts, more than seventy photographers who called Terry Toedtemeier friend or mentor have donated 132 works in his memory. While landscapes—Toedtemeier’s favorite subject—are an emphasis of this special collection, street views, still life scenes, and portraiture complete this lasting tribute to a curator who approached every subject with infectious enthusiasm.
For more than twenty years, Terry Toedtemeier shared his passion for the art of photography with visitors to the Portland Art Museum. As the Museum's first Curator of Photography, he added more than 5,000 photographs to a small but substantial permanent collection, forming a robust group of works that chronicles the history of photography. During his tenure, Toedtemeier curated and collaborated on the organization of numerous exhibitions that ranged in scope and subject matter from political and cultural themes to historical overviews and individual artist retrospectives. His curatorial vision culminated in the critically successful 2008 exhibition and publication Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867-1957.
An accomplished photographer in his own right, Toedtemeier's landscape photographs are included in numerous collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. Toedtemeier's photography explores the spectacular geology of the Pacific Northwest, especially its unique basalt formations. With a degree in geology from Oregon State University and a lifelong sensitivity to natural beauty, he was an artist and scholar who merged aesthetics and science.
This online gallery features those works gifted to the Portland Art Museum in memory of this dynamic and beloved curator and artist.
