Mark Tobey arrived in Seattle to teach at the Cornish School in the early 1920s after working as a fashion illustrator in New York. Travels to China and Japan in the 1930s renewed Tobey's earlier interest in calligraphy, which led him from modernist scenes of Seattle's streets to densely layered works often referred to as "white writing," characterized by an overall calligraphic net of marks and images. Tobey used this system to express movement and light and the balanced interconnection of all elements in his compositions.
