Gleaning—the right of the destitute to scour harvested fields for any remaining grain—is an age-old part of agrarian life dating to biblical times. Here Jean-François Millet contrasts the back-breaking labor of three gleaners with the bountiful harvest seen behind them, creating an image that addresses both the plight of the poor and the politics of abundance.
