Description

A professor at the prestigious China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhao is one of the most prominent printmakers working in China today. Like many of his contemporaries, he was inspired by Lu Xun’s use of black-and-white woodblock prints as a medium for political themes, and much of his early work was in that mode.

In his Yellow Mountain series, Zhao depicts the bucolic landscape of Jiangnan, the region south of the Yangtze River. Here he captures the dramatic scenery of Penglai Three Island, a site deep in the Huangshan range. He exploits the grain of the printing block and the absorbent quality of the paper to mimic the effects of traditional Chinese ink painting.
