Description

Seated Woman is a study of related arcs and curvilinear spirals carved from grainless cherry wood. It is based on an earlier plaster version that was destroyed. Nadelman had moved from Poland and established himself in Paris by 1904. The sculptures produced during his Paris years reflect his wide-ranging influences from Michelangelo to Rodin, folk art, and the decorative forms of the Art Nouveau movement. In 1914, Nadelman came to the U.S., where his deftness and humor were manifested in his stylized animals and statuettes of performers and society figures.
