As part of its political program for enhancing the status of artists, the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture encouraged portraits of its members. Revel created sympathetic depictions of the sculptor Jean Dubois and this unidentified sculptor. These renderings may have led the Academy to ask Revel in 1682 to paint two of its most distinguished members in the field of sculpture, François Girardon and Michel Anguier, as qualification for his own membership in the Academy.
