As a student in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s, Mary Corse was inspired by the abstract compositions and color theories of artists like Josef Albers. She soon began to use non-traditional materials like Plexiglas, fluorescent lights, and glass beads to create changing light effects across the surfaces of her paintings. Corse is one of the few women artists associated with the Light and Space movement, a loosely knit group of artists in Southern California working with aspects of Minimalism, Op art, and geometric abstraction.
