Description

From Objects of Contact: Encounters between Japan and the West

Fukumoto Fuku's thin-walled, distinctive porcelains strike a balance between functional vessels and sculpture. She builds them from separately thrown forms, which are fired a second time with rings of glaze joining the stacked pieces. Fukumoto often grants her pieces titles—usually named after the sun, moon, or stars. Her work belongs to a continuing dialogue poised between the craft tradition of ceramics made for a utilitarian purpose, and the shift toward ceramic sculptural art championed by artists of the Sōdeisha movement in the 1950s.
